This week's update - Castles in the Sand

I managed to get some time hunting with Udrath again this week in EQ2. We started the Desert of Flames content in Sinking Sands and it's been a blast so far. I remember enjoying this zone a lot last time I played it through, and though it's not a common view, I think the Desert of Flames content might be one of my favourite areas in the game.

I hit level 52 and blew a load of plat on a new armour set, and am now level-locked again until Udrath and Merecraft can continue their adventures. We have decided to go with the Court of Coin faction, for no other reason than neither of us has done that before. Whilst Uddy has been away I've been gathering materials for my crafting push to level 60 sage.

Star Wars TOR: Pet Hates

There has been quite a bit of discussion recently on the official forums and other gaming sites about the companion system that Star Wars: The Old Republic will bring to the MMO table. I have seen a lot of comments along the lines of them being pets and complaints that "every class will be a pet class", and "I hate pet classes, why should I have to have companions?". Just last night in level 1-9 chat in EQ2 I saw a similar discussion with lots of decrying of the system and forcing pets onto players. This viewpoint seems to have been borne from misinformation and a lack of coherent information release from Bioware.

I think it's time to set the record straight! Companions in Star Wars: The Old Republic are so much more than the pets found in other MMOs. In fact, I have a feeling that the companion system might just be the main area of true innovation in the game rather than the much vaunted storyline aspect.

Hero of Kugup

Well, I completed my first proper raid in Everquest 2 for four years this week. Merecraft is still level-locked at 50 right now (there is just so much content to run through at level 50), so it was a perfect time to try the Spirits of the Lost raid in Cazic-Thule. This is an epic 4x raid (i.e. it is set up to require four full groups to complete), but we only had two groups.

The raid was incredibly well organised by Voltaan (props mate!). I don't know if it was the respect he had from the raid, or the fact that Acolytes of Valor are a generally well-rehearsed group, but it was so much smoother than the raids I used to run back in the day. Everyone actually did as they were told!

Fluff and stuff

I've been thinking about fluff.

Not the horrible hairy kind you find in your belly button (well, if you are a man of a certain age at least), but rather the kind you get in some of the better MMO games. Perhaps I'd better try to define what I mean by fluff (or fluff content, or carebear bait as it is sometimes called). It's not a well defined word, so here's my take on it so you know what I'm babbling about.

Fluff is game content that you can experience or obtain that does nothing to improve your character's stats, raid potential, abilities or game-beating prowess. It can be found as quest rewards, game systems, faction rewards, through exploration and in many other ways. But why should developers spend valuable time building fluff content instead of new dungeons, raid, mobs or loot?

An officer and a geek

Just a quick update on my recent gaming activities today as I am still working on my next major post (here's a hint as to the subject).

I'm still locked at level 50 in EQ2 with Merecraft and working my way through the last few heritage quests from the Shattered Lands content. This has allowed me to focus on my AAs and I have now managed to reach 100, which I am assured will stand me in good stead.

Life and Death

The next chapter in the story of Merecraft and Udrath's adventures in Everquest 2 is now up in the Roleplay Stories section of the blog. This is the story that Adurj and I are writing together, taking it in turns for each chapter.

You can read it here.

The Rift opens...

I know some of you are looking forwards to Rift: Planes of Telara, though for myself I found the game uninvolving. The release date has now been announced however, and the game will launch in the US and Europe on March 1st 2011.

I wish Rift every success. It is good to see an MMO release that is so stable and polished. However, personally I don't think the game does enough to tempt anyone away from a current subscription unless they just want a change of scenery.

I think the game will do well and maintain a good subscriber base; certainly well enough to continue for a few expansions. In the race between the big three MMO launches planned for this year (the others being Star Wars: The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2) I do foresee it coming a distant third.

Viva la Republique!

I've been looking for a decent Galactic Republic guild for Star Wars: The Old Republic for some time now, as my old LoTRO guild has decided to pin it's flag firmly to the Sith Empire mast. Those of you following my blog will know I've wanted to play the Smuggler class since it was announced, so whilst I will still dabble with Stout n Sturdy (or Spice n Slice as they will be known in SWTOR), my main will be on the Light side. Over the holiday period I think I found a new home on the Galactic Republic of the game.

I've always found deciding on, and settling into a pre-release guild to be a tricky thing. It's an opportunity to make a new start and make new friends, but commit to early to the wrong guild and it can be a painful and difficult thing to admit your mistake. Pre-release guilds can be fragile things and some never make it as far as release. I also have experience from the other side of the fence as a guild leader.

MMO combat - a call to arms

Things are continuing to go well in EQ2. I've locked my level at 50 for now as there is so much content to do, and it gives me a chance to work on my AA trees for a while (I'm currently up to 90 AA points). It also gives Udrath a chance to catch me up so that we can run through the Desert of Flames content together (I remember really enjoying DoF when I ran through it the first time a few years ago).

To keep myself occupied and build up my AA and status points I've been running through the old Heritage Quests for the Shattered Lands. This is made more interesting by the new (to me at least!) ability to mentor your own level down so that the quests become green and blue, thereby offering more of a challenge and giving more AA. The experience has been a slight surprise though.
