Destinies and Demos

A couple of interesting new things happened on my gaming front yesterday. First of all EQ2 released it's seventh expansion, Destiny of Velious. Most of the content will be locked to me as I do not have the expansion (I still have four other expansions to get through first!), but the new update does include some new graphical improvements and some new combat mechanics that I'm interested in trying out. Unfortunately, as is ever the way with major MMO patches, the servers were down for the majority of the night and I didn't get to play. Adurj managed to get an hour or two in however, and you can find his initial impressions over at Le Bard Connection.

The second thing was that whilst waiting for the EQ2 servers to come back up I gave in and downloaded the new Dragon Age 2 demo (PC version) that was released yesterday, two weeks before the game's official launch. In a way I'm glad I grabbed it, because playing it has removed some of the concerns that I had about the game. The problem is I'm now going to find it very hard to wait for the full game to come out next month!

Spectres, Peacocks and Dragons!

My journey through the lands of Ro have continued in EQ2 this week. I have been spending my time running through the Peacock Club quest line, which starts with an attempted rescue of what seems to be a damsel in distress in the city of Maj'Dul. This is an incredibly long and engrossing quest line, that whilst making you run around just a bit too much in the early stages, tells a fun story and leads you into some interesting places.

The quest leads you into the murky world of Court politics in Maj'Dul, and leads you into the Living Tombs in search of ancient information that may explain the true purpose behind the secretive society known as the Peacock Club. It's a lot of fun, and I've made two levels and a couple of AAs running through this quest. It's certainly worth running through at least once if you've never played it before. Eventually the quest line leads to an epic raid at which you can pick up a Tier 6 prismatic weapon (though it will be a while before I get that I fear).

Voltaan has been helping me run through the quest. I could probably manage it solo  but it would take forever; there are a lot of mobs to get through in the Living Tombs.

Little Big Planet 2

I've been playing Little Big Planet 2, which came bundled with my new PS3. I missed out on the first game so have no real point of reference; I can't tell if the original was as weird as the sequel.

At it's root LBP2 is a platform game, which is one of the genres in which consoles excel (apart from platform games, driving games, and beat-em ups I'd rather play other genres on my PC). It's oddness and surreal nature quickly become apparent within a few seconds of Stephen Fry's mellifluous tones beginning the narration.

Radiohead spring a surprise!

Not a gaming related post I'm afraid, rather just a heads up for any Radiohead fans out there (like myself).

The band have announced today that their new album, The King of Limbs, will be released this coming Saturday, 19th February. It will be available for download from the official site only, with a vinyl/cd version to be released at a later date.

PS3 as a media center: addendum

Following on from my recent post here, on my experience with turning my PS3 into a media center, I have been playing around a little more and have a bit more advice based on my findings.

First of all I am no longer using DVDShrink to encode my movies. I had a few issues with the movies I had copied using this software. Creating small files and playing them sequentially worked well, but there was a noticeable pause and stutter whenever the PS3 switched from one file to another. Additionally, a couple of my movies had issues with syncing the sound up after I had fast-forwarded or reversed them.

So, I looked for another method and came up with the following.

How to turn your PS3 into a media center

I now have my new PS3 up and running as a full media center that can play music and movies at the push of a button. I'm slowly filling up my new external hard disk drive with copies of my DVDs and I'm really happy with both the quality and functionality of the system.

PS3 - First Impressions

My new PS3 is now set up and sitting proudly in my video cabinet so I thought I'd share a few general thoughts on the console. As you may know, my primary reason for buying the console is not for games but as a media hub. It's the first real console I've owned since my PS2 (which has been sitting gathering dust for the last five years) so I was interested to see how things had progressed.

Sun, sand and showreels

My time in EQ2 has been a little shorter than normal for the last few days as I've been busy setting up my new PS3. I have still managed to get some decent progression done however, and have moved from the Sinking Sands into the dusty streets of Maj'Dul, reaching level 55 along the way.

A brave new world

I've taken a plunge into a dark and sordid world. I have turned my back on my old friend, the PC. I have been swayed to the Dark Side.

Well, not really.

I'm getting a Playstation 3.

Random thoughts

Two things I want to discuss today that have nothing to do with gaming.

First off, I just have to write a short piece about Blood and Gold by George RR Martin. It's the second part of the third book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series that I discussed in an earlier blog post here. At that time I was still reading the first book, A Game of Thrones, and in the comments section my good pal Jahf wrote that the books got even better.

Well, now I know.
