Arrival arrives in a few hours

Mass Effect 2: Arrival, the final DLC for Mass Effect 2 is released tomorrow. I'll be getting it and letting you know my thoughts and how it ties ME2 into the forthcoming final part in the Mass Effect trilogy.

In the meantime, here is the launch trailer.

A dozen memories

A few pieces of news to highlight this week, concerning Mass Effect 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Everquest.

First up, a quick reminder that Arrival, the new and final DLC for Mass Effect 2 is released on Tuesday (29th March). Joystiq have a preview of the DLC up here, and it sounds interesting, with Shepard having to go it alone for once. There are hints of a big twist in the storyline as well. I'm looking forwards to it as it will help bridge the story into Mass Effect 3, released later this year.

Here be spoilers!

You've probably noticed the new site design by now, and the fact that it is even more Star-Warsy (I made up a word! Go me!) than before. The blog will probably become more focused on Star Wars: The Old Republic as the game gets closer to release as it's the next big MMO I'll be playing. I will continue to play around and change things as time goes by; you'll just have to get used to my constant tinkering!

For me at least, in the lead up to a new MMO the anticipation, discussion, conjecture and scouring of news sites is almost as much fun as playing the game itself.

My thoughts regarding SWTOR recently have been on the subject of spoiler sites, actually as a direct result of my recent Dragon Age 2 experiences. I'll explain.

Friday snippets

A few snippets of news I found interesting today.

First up the final DLC pack for Mass Effect 2 has been officially announced. Arrival will launch on 29th March and bridge the game with Mass Effect 3. The DLC involves Shepard looking for an undercover operative who has evidence of the final Reaper assault on the galaxy. Hopefully I'll have completed Dragon Age 2 by then!

Talking of which, I am still enjoying the game immensely. Some of the chatter between companions has had me in stitches. Bioware have released the first patch for the PC version of the game, which you can download here.

Finally, the first TV ad for Portal 2 popped up today. Have a look below :)

Dragon Age 2 Impressions

Well I'm about 20 hours into Dragon Age 2 now so I thought I would give an update on my impressions of the game so far. Apologies it's taken so long to put together, but it's taken a while to clarify my thoughts, plus I've been spending what little free time I have actually playing the game!
Dragon Age 2 is hot
There's a lot been said about the game on various forums and gaming sites, with the majority of the reviews being favourable but with a large and vocal part of the community taking issue with the direction that Dragon Age 2 has gone in comparison with the original game. All I can do is offer my own opinion, which is that DA2 is a great, but flawed game. For anyone interested in party-based roleplayers however I would say it is a must-play title. Read on for the full skinny.

WTF?

Regular readers will know I'm really looking forwards to HBO's upcoming A Game of Thrones TV adaptation, as well as the fifth book in the series, A Dance With Dragons, which is being released in July.

Well, it appears the news is spreading. I just had to post this as it's the weirdest thing I've seen from Far East television since the infamous Korean animation doggy-poo. The following is a genuine Taiwanese news report about the release of the Game of Thrones TV series and the new book. I think. It could also be about George RR Martin killing a panda and street dancing with Tyrion Lannister whilst Harry Potter falls in love. I'm not sure. It's just too weird for words...

SWTOR PAX East updates

Warning! Long post incoming!

There has been a ton of news from PAX East this weekend regarding Star Wars: The Old Republic that I wanted to share and collate to save trawling all the different fan sites and forums. The overall impression I got from watching all the videos and reading all the Q&As and forum posts is that the game is looking incredible and very polished already.

The week had already started with some unexpected and exciting updates. First off we got the announcement of the innovate pre-launch guild system, then the fantastic new story trailer.

SWTOR: Guilds

Bioware have announced their pre-launch guild registration system for Star Wars: The Old Republic. This is a system unlike any I've seen for a pre-launch MMO, and has the potential to solve a few common MMO issues.

It's quite an in depth system, as the official FAQ shows, but essentially registered users of the SWTOR site can create a guild, stating the guild type (PvE, PvP, RP, etc), timezone, allegiance and playstyle. The guild gets a small mini-site to use, hosted by Bioware, and anyone with a registered forum account can apply to join the guild.

Additionally the guild leader will be able to assign ranks to the members and specify any allied or enemy guilds.

The interesting thing is that any guilds that meet the criteria will then automatically be imported into the game when it launches. When you log in to the correct game server for the first time you will then be given the option of joining the guild. If you accept you will automatically join the guild with the correct rank and permissions already bestowed.

The benefits of this (assuming they get it right) are huge.

It's here (kind of)!

Well, my copy of Dragon Age 2 has arrived! It is installed on my PC, along with all the dowloadable content and ready to go!

Except I can't play it yet.

The game does not officially come out in Europe until Friday 11th, and won't unlock for me until then. Oh well, I'll just have to count down the time by watching the awesome launch video again :)

I'll be posting my early thoughts on the game sometime after the weekend.

The Court of Al'Afaz

Well, I never made it to Berlin due to my nose deciding that my life would be better if it started to produce unbelieveable amounts of gunge and my throat deciding it hated me and wanted to cause me intense pain all weekend. Or, as my two year old son put it (encouraged by his Mum no doubt), "Daddy has man-flu!".

So whilst I wasn't able to experience the delights of the Tiergarten I did manage to spend some time in the well-kept gardens of the Court of Al'Afaz as the Acolytes of Valor raided the zone this weekend.

The Acolytes prepare for battle.

News of Thrones

It's a busy news day today!

Two exciting pieces of Game of Thrones news I wanted to highlight, hot off the press.

First of all, for readers of the books, you'll be pleased to know that A Dance With Dragons, the next book in the series will finally be released in the US and UK on July 12th! This is huge news to fans of the books - it has been almost six years since the last part was originally released.

Secondly, HBO have released the first official trailer for their Game of Thrones TV series. See below.

There won't be any more updates for a few days. I have a busy weekend (including a new EQ2 raid I have not done before) then I'm off to Berlin for most of next week. I'll be back towards the end of next week with my thoughts on how the raid went though.

Auf Wiedersehen!

SWTOR: Death Marks and Jetpacks

Bioware sprung a surprise today by releasing the new class video for Bounty Hunters. There is no doubt that these mercenaries are one of the most visually interesting classes, as you can see in the video (embedded below). Every time they release one of their class videos it makes me want to play that class!

In addition to the new video, IGN has a new interview with the developers about the Bounty Hunter class. There's some interesting stuff here, and it sounds like Bounty Hunters will be very different to other classes in terms of their storyline and companions.

March morsels

Blimey, March already eh?

That's actually great news because it means the Dragon Age 2 launch is getting closer!

Right, a few tidbits of PC gaming news then a quick update on my EQ2 progress are in order I think.

First up some great news for PC gamers. Every year we seem to hear about how PC gaming is dying out, and about how the consoles are now the gaming platforms of choice. Well, I never believe a word of it. After all, PC gaming remains the place with the best technology and the only place real gaming innovations are developed. It seems plenty of others agree too, as the PC Gaming Alliance has today revealed that far from being a dying platform, PC games sales reached a record high in 2010, and that it's 20% growth over 2009 means that investment is continuing to pour in to PC games development. This can only be good news for our favourite gaming platform!
